CSC 3¾" Summer Pine Bone Half Moon Trapper
Two months ago, we were showed a sample aged bone that we immediately fell in love with. The coloration and grain invoked the smells of pine trees in the summer air, along with the sweet resins of chopped pinewood. We watched the bone transform under the skilled hands of a cutler into this pleasingly deep muted woody grained texture, the feel of which is so vibrant, comfortable, satisfying and pleasurable on a knife handle that we immediately agreed to purchase the whole lot.
If your favorite pocket knife predilection is for the larger carved bone knives from Canal Street Cutlery, this one's not for you because the bone pieces we were able to secure were not very big. But if if you like the elegant simplicity of a light single bladed Half Moon Trapper with a comfortable well worn smooth handle style that slips quietly and comfortably into your pocket, get ready.
The Steel Sahlute Man himself, Scott Rauber at www.pocketknivesblog.com, has called our smooth boned trapppers a nearly perfect knife that screams for a chunk of wood, or an apple, or anything that gives you the opportunity to take it out of your pocket and use it - and gave it the highest rating he's ever given a knife before, a 97 Steel Sahlute, and he was all over this particular knife within seconds of learning about it.
Many Canal Street collectors have settled on a particular style of knife to collect, but of the trappers, the Half Moon Trappers has attracted the most ardent of collectors. One collector we know buys any they produce sight unseen. Dealers just call him up when they come out and he sends for it immediately.
If you buy one the first thing you will want to do is just feel it in your hand and admire its 3 3/4" elegant lightness at only 1.9 oz., and savor how its shiny stainless steel slim-line liner frames the muted well worn feel of aged summer pine toned bone around the blade chamber.
We've been fortunate to watch as a Canal Street Cutler skillfully works open the slim trapper blade with their well worn, calloused and practiced fingers. Beautifully mirror polished premium slim 14-4 CrMo Stainless Steel, a hand milled nailmark setting off the finely hefted grind of a double taper, along with its razor sharp tapered edge. Set off by the polished solid hand formed 18% nickel silver bolster that guards the rivet and spring action of the tang, the blade walks open and talks closed, smartly engaging the heat-treated stainless steel sping action. When this blade is set off by summer pine - it brings it to a whole new level of pocket knifely satisfaction.
But the astonishing thing is the reaction of the Cutlers that have been making these knives. Many of them have been making knives for more than 40 years, and you would think that something as small as a knife handle wouldn't turn their heads any more. But everyone of them couldn't help but stare and smile at the finished handles of summer pine in the workshop.
So here's the caveat, after each of them tried to talk me out of one, let me warn you. This is a knife you are going to want to use. You are going to want it in your hands. It will also show nicely to friends, but be careful lest they try to walk off with it - it's a real beauty.
Today we release our newest SFO Half Moon Trappers with a Smooth Aged-Bone Summer Pine finish - our most collectible pocket knife - just 25 up for grabs - and they won't last long . You Can find them here: http://www.droppointhunter.com/SummerPineSmoothAgedBoneHalfMoonTrapper
